Kern Citizens for Energy is urging residents to attend the June 26, 2025 public hearing before the Kern County Board of Supervisors to support proposed amendments to the county’s oil and gas permitting ordinance. The changes are part of the Second Supplemental Recirculated Environmental Impact Report (SSREIR), aimed at refining the local permitting process while meeting environmental standards.

Advocates stress the importance of local oil production for job creation, tax revenue, and energy independence. Kern County’s oil industry supports over 35,000 jobs and contributes $13.5 billion annually to the local economy, funding vital services like schools and public safety. With 83% of California’s active oil wells located in Kern, supporters argue local production is key to reducing reliance on foreign oil and ensuring state energy security.

The hearing will help shape the future of oil permitting in the region, and the group encourages public participation and written comments in support of the measure.
