Kern County weighs major rezoning ordinance for oil and gas permitting | 23 ABC Bakersfield – Veronica Morley

Kern County supervisors reviewed a revised oil and gas zoning ordinance that could allow up to 2,697 new wells annually in unincorporated areas. The proposal introduces a tiered land-use system, stronger CEQA compliance, and a dual-track permitting process aimed at streamlining approvals.

Supporters, including local oil producers and economic advocates, argue the measure is vital to restoring jobs, tax revenue, and public services weakened by industry decline and permitting delays. Critics, however, warn the ordinance puts public health at risk, pointing to past methane leaks and daily disturbances faced by residents living near drilling sites.

This marks the third attempt to pass the ordinance since 2015, following repeated legal challenges. A final vote by the Board of Supervisors is expected following public comment, with implementation possible by year’s end. Environmental groups have signaled that legal opposition remains likely.
